STRENGTHENING EXPORT PROCESSING. The Michelin Export Management System (MEMS)
broke ground in 1998 to support export processing in Michelin's four Asian countries
of production. CIS developed the base system in Manila as an additional software layer
focusing on order entry, order and shipment tracking, and shipment confirmation. MEMS
data are available to other groups, via an Export Data Mart, for generating export statistics.
REPLICATING IN ASIA. After successful implementation in Manila, MEMS was itself
"exported" to Japan, Thailand, and China (Shanghai and Shenyang). The replication confirmed
the system's plug-in capability, working well with the host country's local inventory and
accounting systems. MEMS will soon be deployed in South America and South Africa as well.
ON-LINE TRACKING. CIS developed and implemented an on-line facility that enables
customers to track status of orders and to confirm receipt of shipments via Intranet.
Another CIS-developed facility consolidates supply chain information.
BRIDGING GEOGRAPHICALLY DISPERSED UNITS. CIS implemented Lotus Notes for Michelin, linking
the central office with all branches that have Internet access. The set-up capitalized on Lotus Notes
functionality and included a host of other applications, all aimed at improving employee
communication and organizational effectiveness.
